earthball earthball earthballearthball, split earthball territory

30A Deer Lake SW 1

On October 24, 2010 I found the first three of these earthballs for the second week (see last week). They have emerged and are splitting open to reveal their inner spores. The fifth photo shows the area where they grow, freshly mowed, but having spared these fungi. See the map pin labeled "30A - Deer Lake".

On October 31, 2010 I found all of these barely changed. I did measure them. All are under 2 cm. in diameter.

earthball agedOn November 7, 2010 these appeared to be in the end stages of their cycle. They were fully opened and disintegrating with spores lumped. The photos are not only ugly but are not clear and it is difficult to distinguish the mushroom form from the ground. The temperature had gone below freezing early that morning, for the first frost of the year. See an example to the right.

On November 14 I couldn't find their remains.

See Puffball Watch, 2010-2011.
